Are UFOs and Aliens real?
Yes, UFOs and aliens are real, and they have been visiting Earth throughout our history.
They’re even here today. And they’re vastly more advanced than us.
A few decades ago, belief in intelligent life outside of Earth - aliens - was still more often ridiculed than not. Today, it’s a very different story. It’s more absurd to not believe in it.
As our understanding of other planets, the Solar System and the universe grows, we are collectively realizing that intelligent life simply must exist outside of Earth.
But even though attitudes are changing, there’s still a fair way to go until sincere, open discussion in the mainstream becomes the norm.

How to tell if you’ve seen a UFO
Some people have had spectacular sightings, clearly seeing a craft, and occasionally even extraterrestrial beings. But most sightings are limited to seeing distant lights in the skies - usually witnessed by one person or just a few. Occasionally larger numbers of people have the same sighting, such as the Phoenix Lights in 1997 which were seen by thousands of people.
There are many things that can make people think they have seen an alien spacecraft when they actually haven’t, such as satellites, planes and sky lanterns (sometimes known as Chinese lanterns).
However, some UFOs display very unusual behaviours that don’t fit with these, or indeed with any known terrestrial technology or phenomena, such as:
Extreme speeds
Apparently impossible changes of direction - speeding in one direction and then suddenly changing to another at a sharp angle without any slowing down
Blinking in and out as though a light is being switched on and off
What are UFOs?
UFO literally means ‘Unidentified Flying Object,’ and could refer to anything that meets that description, but the term is now often used to refer to alien spacecraft. These craft are also referred to as “flying saucers”, “cigar-shaped objects” or “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” (UAP).
Of course, many objects first thought to be alien spacecraft, turn out to be other things. But there are still some that simply can’t be explained by conventional means.
In 2020, the Pentagon released three grainy videos taken by Navy pilots who witnessed speeding objects mysteriously disappear. After a thorough review, the DoD found the videos did not reveal any sensitive capabilities or systems, and did not ”impinge on any subsequent investigations of military airspace incursions by unidentified aerial phenomena.” The videos show what pilots saw during training flights in 2004 and 2015. They remain unexplained.
Eerie UFO sightings we can’t 100% explain UFOs (and all the weirdness that comes with them) are in the news again after a whistleblower testified to Congress that the U.S. government has secretly been collecting and reverse-engineering UFOs for decades. Another shocking bit of testimony from this hearing: Nonhuman “biologics” were collected from some UFOs as part of this highly classified program. While these allegations haven’t been proven true, they’ve thrust UFOs and aliens back into the national spotlight, with the public asking one of humanity’s biggest, and oldest, questions: Is there other life in the universe?
Everyone has an opinion when it comes to extraterrestrial life. 'We're not crazy' pilots tell Yellowknife air traffic controllers in 2023
Canadian air traffic controllers and pilots couldn't identify two white lights moving in a circular pattern reported over Canada’s Northwest Territories in 2023.
"Good evening, just wondering, do you got two planes that are just to the east of your field doing circuits or maneuvers?" a crew member aboard a Canadian North flight headed to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, asked air traffic controllers. It was just before midnight on January 29, 2023. "Negative, I have no reported traffic in the area," the Yellowknife air traffic controller replied. "Do you have a visual on something?" The crew of the twin turboprop Canadian North aircraft responded somewhat hesitantly, "Yeah, we're looking at two lights dancing around here, to the east of your field... They're above us, about, I don't know what. We're not seeing them on TCAS (traffic collision avoidance system). But we can see the lights moving around."
There's a pause before the crew member radios back to say, "We're not crazy."
"No, we believe you," the air traffic controller replies. The sighting remains unexplained.
AREA 51 & ROSWELL
Some of you may be wondering about Area 51, which is so spooky we’ve dedicated an entire article to it. As for Roswell, the mother of all UFO stories, no object was actually observed so we’ve parked Roswell to one side. For those who don’t know the story, The Roswell UFO incident took place in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, involving the alleged crash of an extraterrestrial spacecraft and the recovery of its debris by the US military. According to the story, the wreckage was taken to a military base, where it was kept secret and covered up by the government.
Betty and Barney Hill
It’s only fair that we begin with one of the most famous UFO and alien abduction cases in history: the Betty and Barney Hill case. The two were driving on a road in New Hampshire at night when a bright light seemed to start following them. When they eventually got home, it was daylight, their clothes were dirty and ripped, their watches had stopped working—and they couldn’t remember a thing. During sessions with a psychiatrist, they later recalled being probed and violated by aliens during an abduction. The case was investigated by Project Blue.

THE PHOENIX LIGHTS INCIDENT - 1997, ARIZONA, US In 1997, multiple witnesses reported seeing a large, triangular-shaped object flying over Phoenix, Arizona. The object was described as being massive in size, silent, and emitting a series of lights. Despite the numerous eyewitness accounts and photographic evidence, the Phoenix Lights Incident remains a topic of debate and speculation. Some believe that the object was a secret military aircraft, while others believe that it was an extraterrestrial spacecraft.
THE LAKENHEATH-BENTWATERS INCIDENT - 1956, ENGLAND, UK
As spooky incidents go, theLakenheath-Bentwaters Incident is right up there. The UFO sighting took place in England in 1956 when a series of strange lights were seen in the sky over the Bentwaters and Lakenheath air bases. They were described as being large, glowing objects that were flying at high speeds and performing unusual maneuvers. The sighting was reported by multiple witnesses, including military personnel. It remains one of the most mysterious.
Before UFOs In Roswell, There Was The Maury Island Incident - 1947, PUGET SOUND, WASHINGTON, US
The Maury Island Incident took place in Puget Sound, Washington in 1947. A large, doughnut-shaped object was seen hovering above the waters of Puget Sound, and strange objects, including rocks and metal fragments, reportedly fell from the craft and landed on the nearby island of Maury. The sighting was reported by two witnesses and to this day, the incident continues to generate interest and speculation among UFO enthusiasts.
THE WORLD'S UFO HOTSPOT - 1992-2023, BONNYBRIDGE, SCOTLAND The picturesque Scottish town of Bonnybridge between Glasgow and Edinburgh is the world's UFO hotspot with more than 6,000 sightings and residents are demanding to know why. Local councilor Billy Buchanan wants a government investigation: “Is it military? We don’t know. But we demand to know.’’ UFO experts have descended on Bonnybridge but no one can explain the alien crop circles or sightings that began in 1992 when a motorist reported a craft floating over the road nestled between the dark rolling mountains and misty glens.
THE COYNE HELICOPTER INCIDENT - 1973, OHIO, US The Coyne Helicopter Incident is a well-known UFO sighting that took place in Ohio in 1973. According to eyewitness accounts, a U.S. Army Reserve helicopter was flying over Mansfield, Ohio when it encountered a strange, cylindrical object that was reportedly hovering in the air. The object was described as being over 100 feet in length and having several lights on its surface. The helicopter crew reported that their instruments were affected by the presence of the object, and that it appeared to be maneuvering in a way that defied the laws of physics.
Zimbabwe children and the end of the world
In September 1994, several UFOs allegedly hovered near a school in Ruwa, Zimbabwe, reports Vanity Fair. The children who observed these UFOs were terrified when they were asked to explain what had happened. They described beings with big heads, no nose (just two holes), no mouth and long black hair. The children said they were dressed in dark suits and communicated telepathically. “I think it’s about something that’s going to happen,” said one little girl. “What I thought was maybe the world’s going to end. They were telling us the world’s going to end. I don’t even know. It just popped up in my head. He never said anything. He talked just with his eyes.”
The O'Hare International Airport saucer
On Nov. 7, 2006, United Flight 446 was about to depart from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport when a dozen United Airlines employees spotted an odd metallic craft hovering over the gate. The employees reported that it hung in the air for several minutes before finally shooting up at breakneck speed into the clouds. The strangest part? The UFO did not register on the airport’s radar, despite all the witnesses. The FAA declined to investigate, chalking it up to a “weather phenomenon.”
The Broad Haven Primary School drawings
The BBC reports that in 1977, a group of school children from the Broad Haven Primary School claimed to have seen a UFO near their playground. The teachers of the school refused to believe them, but when the children were separated and asked to draw pictures of the experience, they all came up with the same drawing of a flying saucer.
The Frederick Valentich disappearance
Valentich radioed Melbourne Flight Service at 7:06 pm to report that an unidentified aircraft was following him at 4,500 feet (1,400 m). He was told there was no known traffic at that level. Valentich said he could see a large unknown aircraft which appeared to be illuminated by four bright landing lights. He was unable to confirm its type, but said it had passed about 1,000 feet (300 m) overhead and was moving at high speed. Valentich then reported that the aircraft was approaching him from the east and said the other pilot might be purposely toying with him. Valentich said the aircraft was "orbiting" above him and that it had a shiny metal surface and a green light on it. Valentich further reported that he was experiencing engine problems. Asked to identify the aircraft, Valentich radioed: "It's not an aircraft." His transmission was then interrupted by unidentified noise described as "metallic, scraping sounds" before all contact was lost.
The Muscarello Exeter incident
It was 1965 in Exeter, New Hampshire, when a hitchhiker named Norman Muscarello saw five strange red flashing lights in the woods. As TV station WMUR recounts, the source of the lights suddenly came toward him at a frightening speed. Muscarello dove into a ditch to avoid being hit before flagging down a motorist. The police investigated the area, and they, too, saw the same aircraft with the same bright red lights speed off out of sight. Today, the event is celebrated with a yearly Exeter UFO Festival.

A UFO in Stephenville, Texas
Faster than a speeding bullet — and bigger than a Wal-Mart.
That's how residents near the west Texas town of Stephenville described an object they spotted in the sky one night last week.
Dozens of people — including a pilot and a police officer — said a UFO hovered over the farming community for about five minutes last Tuesday before streaking away into the night sky.
Pilot Steve Allen saw the object when he was out clearing brush off a hilltop near the town of Selden. Allen described the unidentified object as being an enormous aircraft with flashing strobe lights — and it was totally silent.
He said the UFO sped away at more than 3,000 mph, followed by two fighter jets that were hopelessly outmaneuvered. Allen said it took the aircraft just a few seconds to cross a section of sky that it takes him 20 minutes to fly in his Cessna.
The veteran pilot said the UFO, an estimated half-mile wide and a mile long, was "bigger than a Wal-Mart."
Military officials, however, were skeptical. They said the residents are letting their imaginations run wild and passed it off as an optical illusion. They said it was likely nothing more than a reflection of sunlight on two airliners.
Officials at a nearby air force base also said their fighter pilots didn't chase down anything that night.
The incident was eerily similar to a UFO sighting a little more than a year ago at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
As many as 12 United Airlines employees spotted the object and filed reports with United.
Richard French and the drowned UFOs
In the 1950s, it was Lieutenant Colonel Richard French’s job to explain away UFO phenomena for the government. There was only one problem: Lt. Col. French actually saw alien ships with his own eyes, reports the Daily Mail.
At a Citizen Hearing on Disclosure in 2013, the then-83-year-old man told the truth for the first time about what he saw as a young man in the waters of St. John’s, Newfoundland: two UFOs that had crashed and sunk in the water, and aliens trying to fix them. They succeeded and took off. He didn’t mention UFOs in his report at the time.
Sixty-five years after a UFO allegedly crashed in Roswell, New Mexico, a retired Air Force official has spoken out to say that not only did the shocking incident really happen – but it happened twice.
Lt. Col. Richard French, who served in the military for more than 27 years, was in Alamagordo, New Mexico, in 1947, when an unusual object fell from the sky and crashed to the ground in Roswell.
Military authorities issued a press release after the shocking incident, saying: ‘The many rumours regarding the flying disc became a reality yesterday when the intelligence officer of the 509th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disc.’.
But, just 24 hours later, the military retracted their earlier statement and claimed the object they had first thought was a 'flying disc' was a weather balloon that had crashed on a nearby ranch.
The media and the public accepted the explanation without question. Since then, conspiracy theorists and officials such as French have called into question the military's line on the incident.
Hase Brandon, an agent who served 25 years with the CIA, recently claimed that information relating to the crash had been concealed in a hidden vault within the agency's Langley headquarters.
'It was not a weather balloon - it was what people first reported,' he said. 'It was a craft that did not come from this planet.'
